Mambazha Pulissery {Recipe}

Mambazha Pulissery or Mambazha Kaalan, as it is known in some parts of Kerala, is a traditional dish, a favourite in every household.10156027_515952005176862_6834819328517661071_n

It’s a sweet and sour yoghurt based dish, very easy to prepare and needs very few ingredients. Traditionally, this dish is prepared using nattu manga, a special variety of mango. They are very sweet and small in size. This is also a common dish in Kerala sadhya / grand feast

Recipe:

Ingredients:
Ripe Mangoes (Mambazham) – 2 – 3 nos.
Turmeric Powder – ½ tsp
Chilly Powder – 1 tsp
Salt as per taste.
Coconut grated – 1 cup
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Fenugreek powder (ulluva poddi) – ¼ – ½ tsp
Curds/yyogurt(has to be very sour) – 1 cup
Sugar (optional)-2 tsp
Coconut Oil – 2 tbsp

For the tadka/tempering:
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds – ½ tsp
Dry red chillies – 2-3 nos.
Curry leaves

Method:
Peel mangoes and boil it whole in water along with turmeric, chilli powder and salt.

Grind the coconut along with the mustard seeds and cumin seeds to a fine paste and add this to the boiling mango.Add the fenugreek powder. If the mangoes are not very sweet, you may add 2 tsps. of sugar, at this point.
Bring this to a boil.

Blend the yogurt to make it smooth and add this to the mixture.
Keep stirring continuously. Switch off the gas just before it reaches the boiling point. Keep stirring for ½ min. after taking it off the flame. This is to ensure that the yogurt does not split.

Heat coconut oil in a pan.Add mustard seeds and when they crackle, add fenugreek seeds, red chillies and curry leaves.
Add the tempering to the mango curry and mix well.

Mambazha Pulisshery is ready to be served with hot steamed rice.
