Lemp Brewery is first amongst the organized chains to set up a micro-brewery pub in Gurgaon; which otherwise is already at an over-supply. I stepped into the resto-pub with an expectation of having good beer with American-sized food portions. Given the huge space occupies within the Star Mall, It immediately strikes a reference to Rockman’s beer Island, except this one has much more comfortable seating. Looking at the big beer barrels, my appetite wanted to get into ‘Man Vs Food’ mode. Luckily the better sense prevailed and I started focusing on enjoying the evening than ever daring to empty the barrels.
Two of the six beers in the menu, Wit and lager, weren’t available. Brew master Ishan Grover acknowledges us and says that these beers needs to be matured for 2 more days where the process itself takes between 10 days – 35 days. I was impressed that there is someone who believes in serving the beer at the right time. On being asked if Lemp is the only one in the city to serve Ale’s, Ishan’s pride and passion was clearly visible when he said, “We are the only one serving beer”.
I tried the other four beers, and settled for Jurassic Dark (225/550ml) for rest of the evening. It had a body, hint of chocolate and toasted malt flavor. An excellent option in absence of my regular beer – Lager. Unfortunately, like any other place offering booze, the food was no gourmet stuff. Prawn Pakoda was served in place of Prawn Tempura (495). The Pork Burger (395) wasn’t fresh. Pizza (400) was nice, but there was no smoky flavor which is infused in a wood fired pizza. Why to waste wood, when the same results can be obtained by a good electric oven? I did enjoy the Mexican Spud (225); Jacket Potatoes with baked beans and melted cheddar cheese. Another well-made dish was Baked Spaghetti with corn and spinach (350). Served along with garlic bread, it was the best way to end the meal.
The live gig at the pub was nice but Lemp better compensates the guests, if they are going to initially test sound at such high decibels.
Lemp offers some fine beers and brew master plan to offer new variants on each visit. The food isn’t great but goes well post few beers. I wouldn’t mind going back with friends for a good time with Beer and Pizzas.
