A welcome trend in Gurgaon food scene is that of gourmet delivery. So now you can expect gourmet food packaged attractively and efficiently, arriving at your door step and delivered by a smart presentable uniformed person. One such operation is Asian Haus that promises to bring a taste of the best in contemporary Pan-Asian cuisine to Gurgaon. To substantiate their claim they have sent some food samples home.

The packaging of the food is impressive, and it arrives pretty hot, delivered promptly by a smartly dressed gentleman. Wasting no time I get on to tasting it. For the sake of ease of reading, I will now bunch up the dishes into great, average, and not so good.

First with the good ones. The first dish I taste reminds me of our own good old fried idli. Spicy rice cakes (Rs 275) are rice cakes stir fried with chilli paste, chives & bean sprout and are quite a spicy tangy treat. The Asian Chicken Salad (Rs 295) is tasty. Haus khao suey (Rs 475) is a Burmese noodle soup, delivered in four boxes of soup, yellow noodles, garnishes & condiments, and is good. It is definitely a good dish to order.

Otak Otak

Now to the average ones. Otak otak (Rs 295) is an Asian snack with fish marinated with spices and kaffir lime leaves, moulded into cakes wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. It is a light snack though some may find the texture a bit pasty. Pan fried noodles (Rs 345) again  comes in two boxes, soft and crispy yellow noodles & saucy mixed vegetables and is pleasant without being exceptional. Chicken in black bean sauce (Rs 375) again is a competent dish but not remarkable.

Chicken Shrimp Sui Mai

Lastly the not so good ones. Chicken prawn sui mai (Rs 295) is not a cohesive bite. Sumatran lamb rendang (Rs 465) is the Indonesian delicacy of lamb in thick brown coconut gravy. The lamb/goat here has two issues. The quality of the meat is below average and it is significantly undercooked making it hard and nearly impossible to eat. Nasi goring (Rs 345), another Indonesian staple lacks the depth and the flavours of the original dish.

The food quality at Asia Haus is mixed bag. There are some good dishes, but given the prices here, every dish has to be perfect. The delivery is great. Ordering Khau Suey is a good option, till the restaurant gets the food totally right!
