Chi, the restaurant at IIT Gate famous for its congees has recently opened another outlet situated at the Eros cinema complex at the Jung Pura market. This 48-seater eatery has been designed on “vaastu principles to encourage free flow of energy”, says Shikhar Arora, the young proprietor and the franchisee for the Jung Pura location.

I start with the virgin mojito (Rs 175) which, though would shock any Cuban citizen for its virgin character, is refreshing and pleasant. As I sip into our non-alcoholic tipple, I go through the pages of the vast menu which traverses the globe. I decide to go with the star attraction first and soon arrives chicken congee (Rs 325) cooked a la Vietnam, making it a thicker porridge than the Chinese version.  This dish is truly delightful, hitting the spot perfectly.

Next to come are the dimsum. The pork dimsum (Rs 285) is juicy but on the bland side. The Prawn Hargao (Rs 195) and Chicken Dimsum (Rs 175) are somewhat better, but not as good as many other places in NCR.

The Prawn clay-pot (Rs 450) which has prawn and rice steamed in a clay pot could be served in any high-end Indian restaurant as ‘dum prawn biryani’. Immaterial of the nationality, this is a good dish. The thukpa that is served next has a tomato-ey base but lacks the magic of the thukpas served in humbler establishments at Dilli Haat. Crispy Butter Garlic prawns (Rs 350) do not have any hit of butter or garlic. Grilled pomfret in tamarind sauce (Rs 485) is good but not great.

This is early days yet, since the restaurant has been in operation for just a month. While the congee and clay pot are much recommended, the restaurant can be more than a one-dish-wonder if the rest of the food is made to rise above the ordinary, to match up to the magic delivered by the congee. Also the service is a bit too lackadaisical. That is when residents of Jung Pura and neighbouring colonies will come back for more in throngs.
