Galleria market has some exciting eateries in Gurgaon but it lacked a good restro-bar; a vacuum now filled with ‘Escape’. Offering over 140 indoor and open terrace seating, and choice of Continental, Indian Italian and Chinese, Escape is a welcome entrant.

The interiors doesn’t elicit a wow feel or the food may not be strictly gourmand, nonetheless, comfortable seating definitely makes us for the long drinking sessions and the food is much better than its peers in Gurgaon. The DJ console has been positioned to offer 270° view of the bar who delivers foot tapping music to the guest. Bouncers not sharing the floor space inside the pub is a pleasant change in the city where every second day some untoward incident is reported with bouncers. Open terrace area is good for couples and friends to enjoy the pub sans the high voltage sound which makes it impossible to strike a conversation.

We liked the selection of single malt and beer but felt it desperately needs a better wine collection. The mojito was made well. We would have loved it even more if it used brown sugar instead of the regular one. The other cocktails were just as good. In the starters we ordered a veg and non-veg platter followed with fish fingers. Except the Paneer Tikka which wasn’t marinated properly everything was enjoyable. I wouldn’t blame Escape for not delivering on this count as there are handful of people who can make great Tikkas with this commonly available ingredient.

The delight of the day was the wood-fired thin crust pizza. Well loaded topping and delivering good smoky flavor being cooked in a clay oven, it vanished within minutes from our plates.

There are two kinds of wood-fired ovens – One which uses 100% wood, and the other which uses electricity and little wood to get the smoky flavor in the pizza. Due to lack of ventilation in most malls, second choice is obvious. The complete wood fired ovens are difficult to handle as the temperature is manually controlled, but the result makes it worth the efforts.

‘Escape’ is a great way to unwind for the young-at-heart looking for a comfortable place to enjoy drinks and company.
