Amritsar is known for the food delights. If in this city any other cuisine can leave its impression, it is remarkable. At last my search for authentic Kashmiri cuisine ended at Kashmiri Wazawan in Amritsar owned and operated by Abdul Salam Khan and his two sons Aijaz Khan and Aijaz Khan though not twins but shared the same name, wonder why?
The rich red colour of the thin curry of the Mutton promises to fire ones tongue a little bit but then it’s a heavenly dish. A plate serves two jumbo Pieces of mutton drenched in fiery curry for 100/- rupees served with a plate of rice to mellow down the mildly burning tongue. The pieces were not melt-in-the-mouth but every chew filled it with simmering juices of fresh mutton.
A humble outlet in the crowded Hall bazar, Katra Sher Singh Market does not boast of comfort eating but ensures satisfaction of taste buds. Few posters in Urdu on the walls and the Kashmiri accent may give a feel of being somewhere away from Amritsar.
The Kashmiri Rajma and aalu tamatar ki sabji (Potato in spicy tomato gravy) complimented by spiced onions for vegetarian-at-heart too looked appealing. Every Punjabi home specializes in these dishes but my first bite of these revealed the authentic Kashmiri taste and also why by the evenings the Patilas are scratched for the last morsel.
I would call it a place to swing your taste buds to some variation in Amritsar with the suggestions of adding the Kulfa from the near by Mahajan’s Kulfi and sweet shop to the menu.
