On entering this restaurant intriguingly named restaurant ‘The Joint’, situated in a corner of the Galleria market, the mood hits me. The shack like interiors, the posters of Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and Che Guevra, groovy music, and a proprietor with a beatific bearded visage seated in a corner all add up to make for a feeling of complete relaxation, and the general desire to do absolutely nothing. As I find myself a seat lazily, I am approached by the owner Sunil Memotra duly armed with a menu card.
Joining the ever increasing tribe of foodies-turned-amateur-restaurateurs in Gurgaon, Sunil has recently returned from Dubai to start an adda of like minded people. “This is a place for chitchats, or just hanging out on your own. One of our patrons sits here to prepare for her CAT exam, because she says she likes it here,” he says with quiet satisfaction. The food, that consists of an all day breakfast, sandwiches, shakes, pasta and some main courses, fits this frame of mind well.
I start with Sunil’s personal favourite, the humble chicken soup (Rs 89) which is light, flavourful and comforting, as it should be. Next is the Greek salad (Rs 169). This is the American version, significantly different from the chunky summer salad that the Greeks are used to. It has loads of lettuce, tomatoes, smaller bits of feta, chopped olives, cucumbers and bell peppers with a mustard vinaigrette dressing; not quite original Greek, but a crunchy and tasty salad nonetheless.
The only disappointment of the afternoon is the fish and chips (Rs 209), a popular English takeaway meal. The fish fillets are too thin and are consumed by the batter giving the dish a strange mouth-feel. The accompanying chips and tartar sauce are well made.
The restaurant bounces back with a bang with the next dish, grilled sea bass in caper sauce (Rs 319). It’s simply exquisite. Here we have fresh fillets of fish cooked to perfection, allowing them to retain their juices, and deliver a soft, flaky bite. The mild caper sauce adds a creamy dimension to the taste, and the accompanying veggies are grilled just right.
As I wash down the meal with a pineapple shake (Rs 99) I think pleasant, thoughts. As Sunil says, this is the mood the food and the ambience are meant to deliver. The Joint is a good place to chill with friends or just be alone reading a book or thinking of world peace.
