There is a saying… “You can take a Delhiite out of Delhi but you cannot take Delhi out of a Delhiite”. On my recent trip to Meerut, I couldn’t help but follow delicious aroma of Chole Bhature near Abu Lane Market. And guess where it was coming from? It was from a small corner outlet called “Delhi ke Chole Bhature”. The shop is over 40 years old and sometime reputation leads to conflicts. So it happened here as well. The corner shop now belong to an estrange partner while the original one is the small shop next to it, so the locals claim. However, I couldn’t see any dearth of customers at either outlet.

History apart, I was pulled to the shop like a honey bee to a flower. Both the shops specialise in ONLY Chole Bhature. They serve Gulab Jamun as well to satiate the sweet tooth desires of Indians after a hearty meal.  A plate costs Rs.25 and if you are not hungry but can’t control your heart, then you can always go for a single Bhatura worth Rs.15. Isn’t it convenient.

The seating space comes at a premium and is small. So if you want to enjoy a tasty stuff, please grin the pain but let me tell you it is worth it. The Bhature come hot from the wok, deep fired, soft and flaky. I always enjoy my first bite of Bhatura as it is. No Choley, No pickle, No chutney and No onion salad. The warm body of Bhatura leaves a neutral but feel good taste in your mouth. The Chole are mildly spiced which you could spice up with hot chili pickled lightly. Other assortments served are carrot pickle, boiled potato lightly sautéed in spices and onions garnished with mint chutney. You get a hearty refill of Chole, pickle, onion, potato and chili on request.

The best way to eat Chole Bhature is to order a plate and share the two hot Bhature with another friend. This way you will avoid eating a cold Bhatura after you are through with your first hot one. This suggestion obviously does not apply to a fast eater.

And if you are guessing whether I went to the corner shop or the small (claimed to be original) one…..keep guessing 🙂
