Zaitoon should not be in a food court. Thank god it is though. Because this is where some of the best food-court food resides. This exotic and meaty heaven resides at the DT mall near Bristol hotel. DT Mall may not have much going for it, but it certainly has the best food-court food. I landed up here with the intention of having a lot of authentic Middle Eastern kababs, and choose the option to try their mutton platter.

This platter is laden with meaty delights. The mutton basravi tikka, as the name suggests, comes from the port city of Basra in Iraq. The kabab has a tomato base, and uses twenty one different spices to give it a memorable taste. The Baghdadi kebab is another kind of mutton tikka, which is not as complex, but quite toothsome. The mutton arayes looks like pizza slices, but the resemblance ends there. An arayes has a crispy khubus (Lebanese bread) as its base and is topped with a layer of minced meat, spring onions, parsley and sumac, which is an Arabian red spice. However, unlike the Indian red chilly, it is tangy without the heat. The accompanying hummus, turshi (pickled veggies) and labneh (hung yoghurt dip) are competent.

Zaitoon will leave you happy and yet light. The taste transports you from the grungy surroundings of a food court straight to the back streets of Basra.
