Vaango – Gurgaon, Noida, Delhi

[Rated: 2.5/5]

Neat and clean ambience, courteous staff and product uniformity is ensured when a professionally run company sets up a chain serving South Indian food; Vaango. What it does not ensure is the authentic fare.

Vaango meaning ‘Welcome’ is the new chain by Devyani International (same people who brings KFC and Pizza Hut). Nice bright green interiors help me photograph without using the camera flash and the walls provides an interesting read of the rich cultural and food practices of South India. On the food front, sadly, we were left high and dry. Rava Butter Masala Dosa (105) was crisp; filling was nice but inadequate. Medhu Vada (80) and Vegetable Uttapam (90) were pretty average and like Rasam (30), Stew served along with Neer Dosa (95) wasn’t hot enough. Rasam and Mysore Masala Dosa (105) weren’t as spicy as they are meant to be. Seems like other QSR chain’s they have also moderated the spices to suit the wider audience.

Butter Milk (40) was too watery and Rava Kesari (70) was one of the worst I have ever had; dry and lumpy. Kasi Halwa (70) wasn’t available. Only redeeming items were the rice dishes – Tamarind rice, Tomato rice and Bisibele Bath (85 each), which were nearer to the real things.

The touch screen feedback panel at the outlet is connected to internet and records and instantly sends the feedback to the management. Sadly, my feedback on the system went without an acknowledgement even after a week.

  1. On my first visit to Vaango in South POint-Gurgaon, I just tried their Appam and Stew last nite. Appam for just a Plain thick dosa made in Appam Kadhai. Missing was the use of coconut milk. As regards the stew, it was nice cold thin and had of course some raw vegetables. Since my daughter is a hardcore Appam fan, I had ordered three combos for her. I has highly disappointing experience for my daughter and we had no guts to checkout the other stuff at Vaango.
