Chaubara, Galleria Market, Gurgaon – Rajasthani and Punjabi Restaurant

[Rated: 4/5]
The Aapno Rajasthan theme is conveyed through its décor done tastefully through the wall hangings, sceneries, glasses, jugs, server dresses, and the charpoy style chairs. The feel is further accentuated by the server attire and the live folk music in the background. In such a traditional setting, we just didn’t feel like ordering anything from the Punjabi menu and settled for a Rajasthani Thaali (Rs 289), Jaipuri Mewa Pulao (195), Undhiyu ki sabji served with four Thepla (195), and Santre ki Kheer (95).  Fortunately we were in time. Shortly we could see all seats of this 100-seater restaurant getting occupied in spite of the fast turnaround time which is a norm in such places. Though I found the general ambience to be good, but at times restaurant was much noisier as seats were closely placed.
Chaach
The unlimited Thaali is a delight and consisted of Dal-Baati-Choorma, Dahi Vada, Aloo Saag, Kadi Pakoda, Gatte ki Sabji, Bhindi Masala, Sangar Ka Achaar, Lahsun ki Chutney, Papad, Phulka, Missi Roti, Reshmi Parantha, Bedwi, Chaach, followed by Moong Dal Halwa & Gulab Jamun in desserts. This meal is fit for the kings (and the queens; can’t be gender biased). Each of the dishes was fresh and prepared at its best. The only exception was Dahi Vada where curd was sour, and was left as it is. Do not miss the Reshmi Paratha and the crispy Missi Roti which I thoroughly enjoyed along with Kadi and Gatte ki Sabji.
Rajasthani Thaali

It was my first experience of Undhiyu ki Subji, and it was a delight. A mix of unripe banana, Yam (Jimikand), Colocasia (Arbi), baby brinjal, small whole Potatoes and similar sized onions, it went extremely well with the sesame seeds Thepla. Similarly oh-so-rich Jaipuri Mewa Pulao was full of dry fruits and the sweet taste was reminiscent of my earlier visit at Jodhpur. The desserts in the thaali matched the rest of quality of food, though Santre ki Kheer was misleading. It wasn’t a kheer at all, but nector and chunks of orange in Rabri. It was nice but after a heavy meal, I wasn’t looking at something as heavy as Rabri.

Jaipuri Mewa Pulao
Santre ki Kheer
Prices for ala-carte food may look expensive, but the big portions make up for the cost. Option to choose ala-carte food, and Thaali served in a much nicer ambience takes it one notch up than the similar Thaali served at a popular chain in the city.
