Here is the must try spicy tomato chutney which is an excellent accompaniment with Idly. Rajeev Nandagopalan shares his grand ma secret recipe.
Tomatos – 5
Onion – 1
Red chilly – 4
Curry leaves – 15
Bengal gram – 2 tsp
Salt as per taste
First fry the dal and the chillis in a little oil and keep aside.
Next fry the onions till translucent, add the chopped tomatos, little salt, 1 tsp sambhar powder.
Let this cool.
Add the previously fried Dal and chillis and blend to a coarse consistency.
In another kadai, splutter a little mustard, curryleaves and fry for a minute.
Add to the blended chutney, adjust spices and serve!
