Hops N Brew, Sector-29, Gurgaon

[Rated: 4/5]

Gurgaon took the lead and became the first city to have a micro-brewery in India, once the policy was introduced. Hops N Brew, spread over two floors, is one of the few such brewery-pub in the city.

Offering four variants in beer – Lager, Strong, Wheat and Dark, and varieties of cuisines to choose from, the restaurant seems to have hit a right chord with the beer lovers. My two thumb rules for a good quality beer are simple – One, it should be drinkable at room temperature and secondly it should not have a bitter after-taste.
Luckily, Hops ‘N Brew scored well on both the check points with wheat beer scoring over others as my personal favorite. The Dark beer was brewed with coffee beans and had a distinct burnt flavor, which wasn’t much to my liking. May be it requires one to be an ardent coffee lover to appreciate the flavor.

Beer Myths… by Arun Kumar Tripathi, Brew Master, Hops ‘N Brew

1)      Bottled beer contains glycerin
2)      Beer bottle if re-chilled loses flavor
3)      Fake beer can be made by mixing a capsule available in market with water
4)      Indian beer is made by only using potatoes. Though it is possible but the taste will make it non-drinkable
Hops ‘N Brew offers select variety from Continental, Italian, Lebanese, Thai, Chinese and Indian grilled food of which I tried a well-made Veg Indian Platter (Rs 345) and Chicken Stroganoff (Rs 365). The platter had spicy Tandoori stuffed mushroom, crispy onion rings, soft Seekh Kebabs, and perfectly grilled Paneer Tikka. It was served along with an excellent mint-chutney which at places I find to be thin and runny. May be it was an indicator of the quality standards ensured at this new outlet. I hope they continue to maintain the same in the times to come. The Chicken Stroganoff in buttery sour cream sauce was elegantly platted and served along with basil garnished rice; appetizing and tasted as good.

The service can definitely be better. One of my beers was served in an un-chilled glass and later I had to stop the server, who in a hurry was taking away my semi-finished glass with still some beer left.
On a good day, the open terrace seating will surely enhance the mood. Inspite of the not-so-great service, the pocket friendly beer (Rs 150/mug) and nice food will give beer-lovers a reason to Cheers!
